State Judicial Systems

The Supreme Court is the state's highest court. Before it come many of the days' most important, and often controversial, legal issues affecting state residents and involving the state's Constitution and laws.

The Supreme Court, by the state Constitution, supervises courts in the states. It also prescribes the procedures and practices followed by judges and lawyers in trying cases in the state's courts.

As one of three equal and independent branches of state government, the courts role is to preserve the rule of law and guarantee the rights and liberties of citizens. It does so by fairly resolving disputes brought before juries and judges as prescribed by law and by administering all aspects of the judicial process consistent with provisions of the Constitutions of the United States of America and the State.
